Toby Was A Sad Dog!

Toby, Mr. Punch’s Dog.

This also is not one of our dogs. He belongs to a Punch and Judy man, but we made his acquaintance last summer at the seaside. Pat and he became very friendly, so we saw more of Toby than we should have done otherwise.

Toby was a sad dog. He always looked unhappy, which was rather against him in his profession, for it was his business to amuse people. At the same time he worked hard, and bit Mr. Punch’s nose at the right moment, and after that he collected money in a little tin which he held in his mouth, and he never forgot to wag his tail by way of saying “thank you.”

He was still more sad when we were leaving, but we hope to see him next summer, so as to cheer him up a little. Needless to say, we never hear from him; after all, he is not the same class as our dogs.

Snobby British Durham Meets Texas Long-Horned Bull!

“Clear the road! Get off the bridge! I’m coming!”

. . . the Durham started on a run, bellowing as he went and hooking cows, calves, dogs, or anything else that came along, roaring at them to get out of the way and not to stand taking up the road when their betters wished to pass.

“Clear the road! Get off the bridge! I’m coming!” roared the Durham.

“Who are you that thinks he owns the earth?” quietly mooed back the long-horned bull”

“You’ll see if you don’t get off that bridge and give me some room to pass, and tell your herd of common cows to get to the side of the road out of my way.”

We Won’t Let Him Mix With the Other Dog!

Jim, the Foxterrier.  “Tubbing Time.”

Jim is very young. He belongs to the coachman’s son. He is a careless dog and never looks where he is going. If there is a mud puddle about, he is sure to fall into it. If there is a sack of coal in the yard, Jim is sure to rub against it, so Jim is usually very dirty, and as we won’t let him mix with the other dogs unless he is clean, he has to be washed every other day, which makes him very sorrowful.
