I had a little pony,
His name was Dapple-gray,
I lent him to a lady,
To ride a mile away;
She whipped him, she slashed him,
She rode him through the mire;
I would not lend my pony now
For all the lady’s hire.

I remember this one, and many more of your posts, as well. Childhood. I used to climb high into a tree, or hide on the roof to read.
I am glad to know you remember some of the illustrations – how nice to link everything to the “now”! Thank you for your comment.
Elephant
I don’t remember the illustration but I certainly remember the rhyme.
