“The St. Bernard’s Visitors.”
Rex is what you might call a noble dog. He is very good natured, he looks after the weak, . . Rex allows the fowls to feed out of his dish, and they are not a bit afraid of him.
Then this big dog will let our baby ride on his back, you have to hold her on, you know, or she would tumble off, and that would never do.
Rex can be cross if he likes, and when tramps come into our garden, he barks and growls, so that they walk off in very quick time.

The chickens. I love them.
I like them too! But I wonder about chickens eating the dog’s food.

I think chickens will eat a lot of things and it never seems to hurt them?
Okay. I have no chickens (not even an urban chicken / modern pet – I know someone who buys their chicken strawberrys). I thought chickens ate grain, but hey, Alpo, grain all the same thing. Maybe they are like crows who eat it all!

Not to mention insects.!
When you think about it, given the timeframe of this book, the illustrator and author probably had a lot closer connection to chickens than we do and therefore more idea of their habits…
Strawberries! goodness! a really pampered chicken.
YES! They did not connect money with what we connect money to – too much $ makes people buy big beautiful strawberries for their chicken! You could waste tons of money right in front of me and I might not get it! But even I knew that buying your chicken really high end stawberries was outside the chicken coup!

Fowl foul.
Yes, fowl foul or what ever else you can do with foul and fowl!! Do you think an urban chicken should eat high end strawberries?

Thank you for following my imaginenewdesigns blog. I like dogs, so I am drawn to the cute puppy in the picture instead of the chickens. 🙂
Well, you found the right post! The dog is a dog, a guard, a pony and a friend to chickens! I too like dogs, but I have also developed an interest in chickens.
